What’s Ahead in the 2016-17 School Year:

A Model District in Des Moines, Iowa

Supported by a multi-year grant from the Wallace Foundation, Des Moines Public Schools has partnered with Learning Sciences International to become a Model District for Rigor. Over time, every school in the district will grow into a Demonstration School for Rigor. Eventually, all schools will be well-equipped to sustain the progress.

As an urban district, DMPS is gearing up to implement LSI’s Demonstration Schools for Rigor throughout the 2016-17 school year. The goal? To transform instruction so that all classrooms exhibit rigorous teaching and learning.

“This is about reducing initiatives so we can have a laser-like focus on strong core instruction for every kid, every single day.” — Matt Smith, Des Moines Public Schools Chief of Schools

“This has honestly been one of the most rewarding years for me as a teacher. All of the training I have received so far has been immediately brought back into the classroom.”

—Kellie Little
Michigan Teacher

“It was a big ‘aha’ for me. I was seeing teachers who never went back to monitor for understanding of critical concepts. Suddenly, it all clicked.”

—Amy Dujon
Florida Principal

“I’ve seen more cross-grade-level collegiality than ever. It didn’t exist when I got here. Next year, I can step back and they can really be the leaders here.”

—Ann Carlson
Minnesota Special Education Teacher
