5 Step Process for Professional Reflection with Teachers

Spring is on its way, which means the wrap-up of teacher evaluation is not far behind.
Many administrators and teachers approached evaluation and observations differently this year due to virtual or hybrid instruction and the general disruption caused by the ongoing pandemic.
This month, we offer a 5-step process to collect teachers’ voices as they engage in data accessible through iObservation. This important opportunity to professionally reflect on strengths and areas for growth from a collective lens can be captured in the Professional Responsibilities domain.
Review and Discuss Professional Responsibilities: Reflection
Professional reflection is an important component of the Focused Teacher Evaluation Model (FTEM). Ask teachers to review the protocols for the three elements in Professional Responsibilities, highlighting where reflection is mentioned (Maintaining Expertise in Content and Pedagogy and Promoting Teacher Leadership and Collaboration).
As a review, engage teachers in a discussion about what reflection at the Applying and Innovating ratings looks and sounds like in these elements.
Support Teachers Through a Professional Development Activity
Individually, ask teachers to brainstorm which elements or processes they felt confident and which they did not within this year.
Next, have teachers organize into discussion groups to share ideas and condense their lists. This activity engages the teachers in considering their own instructional practice, but groups can also expand their individual reflections to connect to the school’s overall strengths and needs.
Additionally, by guiding the teachers to the Desired Effects for Maintaining Expertise in Content and Pedagogy as well as Promoting Teacher Leadership and Collaboration, conversations and reflections can be used as evidence toward the Innovating rating.
Provide Data With iObservation
iObservation provides you with many reporting capabilities from which you can share data to make informed decisions. Select one or several of these reports to discuss with teachers (redact any personal identification or information) or to review with administrators in conjunction with the information shared by teachers.

Use the Data for a Virtual PD Activity
Using the provided data, teachers and/or administrators can look at trends and patterns of strength and places to grow.
Where might there be a school-wide professional development opportunity?
Are there teachers who have a strength in particular elements and could share successful strategies with others?
Preparing for Next Steps
Ask teachers to consider these reflections and jot down an individual instructional goal they would like to work toward either for year-end or for fall. They may also list critical success indicators that would assist them in reaching that goal. If your district uses Deliberate Practice, teachers may consider using these reflections in determining elements.
