Break the “In and Out” Cycle of Underachieving and Create a Sustainable Path Forward

Schedule a Consultation

School turnaround interventions are too often a short-term fix, increasing scores temporarily. That puts your school in jeopardy of closing or becoming charter. At LSI, we work with you to make these changes permanent, creating a stable foundation for continued growth. This means:

  • Raising total school performance in one year
  • Enhancing core instruction
  • Increasing teacher retention
  • Decreasing student behavior referrals

Stay open. Stay public. Break the turnaround cycle and stay a vital part of your community.

Setting a Path for Sustainable Success

LSI’s School Turnaround Model

LSI’s program involves two comprehensive phases, creating a way out of the turnaround cycle.

Phase 1:
Establishing Supportive Conditions for Learning.

This phase ensures that the school has strong, supportive expectations, systems, and processes that foster rigorous teaching and learning for every student.

Phase 2:
Transformation of Core Instruction

This phase shifts the school to engaging, student-centered, standards-based learning. Teachers and school leaders build on a strong culture of team-based, mutual support to prepare students for success in the new economy of the 21st Century

Through These Two Phases, Your Schools Will Grow in Four Key Areas

Key Area 1:
Strengthen core instruction – the proactive response to state-level mandates

From the very start, we help you implement a proactive response to state-level mandates to quickly close educational achievement gaps. The path to this goal is equity and access to strong core instruction for all students.

Key Area 2:
Build strong leadership teams

Leadership is the most influential and critical element of a turnaround. We help you recruit and build strong leadership teams with the skills to foster a supportive climate for learning, effective classroom management, and high quality, engaging core instruction.

Key Area 3:
Establish a culture of collaboration

Collaborative teacher teams are the key to sustainable school improvement through strong core instruction. Agile teacher-led teams can swiftly identify and close learning gaps before they become achievement gaps.

Key Area 4:
Lead, teach, and learn informed by the right data

From principals to school leadership teams, teacher teams, and student academic teams, everyone is responsible to track and verify daily evidence of learning to the standards. These data drive coaching actions that result in rapid, measurably improved teaching and learning for all students.

Case Study: Lakewood Elementary School

Turning Around the Lowest Performing Traditional Public School in Florida

Prior to working with LSI, Lakewood had been the lowest-performing traditional public school in the state trailing 2,792 others with a low “F” and a history of being a “D” or “F” school since 2013.

After three years of intensive work (and in the face of the COVID-19 disruption), Lakewood made one of the largest achievement gains Florida has ever seen. The school improved 40 percentage points to an “A” becoming the only school to go from F to A in 2021.

“Our (LSI) leadership coach started at about the same time as I did, so we jumped right in. Our priority collectively was getting the best staff hired. We interviewed close to 200 teachers. We went last year from hiring 28 people to having 4 true vacancies this year. Our teachers are returning and that gives us a lot of hope of how we can hit the ground running instead of starting all over again.”

Foster Students’ Self-Control and Ownership of Their Own Behavior

When students are engaged, behavior referrals go down and classroom participation goes up. As a vital part of our turnaround programs, students will:

  • Collaborate on interdependent learning tasks that are rigorous and standards-based
  • Practice higher-level cognitive skills
  • Develop advanced social and emotional competence
  • Learn more resilience and self-efficacy

In short, students will learn skills that help them achieve in school, boost scores, and guide them toward the 21st-century. It’s creating education that resonates with teachers and students.

Student behavior referrals at Lakewood Elementary School decreased by as much as 80 percent compared to the previous year.

Empower Teachers as Instructional Experts, Peer Coaches, and Leaders

Teachers see rapid improvement in their students’ learning, engagement, and behavior as a direct result of their growing expertise in their instructional practice through:

  • PLCs that provide regular support through peer coaching and feedback, with teacher teams ensuring that everyone succeeds in moving student achievement forward.
  • Leadership development to guide and support their teams to continuously improved instruction.

Teachers form a strong sense of belonging and ownership of student learning at their schools once they experience the Schools for Rigor culture of high expectations, mutual accountability, collegial support, and engaged, self-regulated students

Core teacher turnover at Lakewood decreased by 55 percent in just one year.
